It’s important that during this process you take an ample amount of time to complete this task and bring the right set of tools.

Tools You Will Need:

Pliers

Screwdriver

Joint Compound

Wall Primer (Optional)

Paint Brush

Putty Knife

Sponge

Paint Matching Your Current Wall’s Color

Now it’s time to jump into the project. Here is our 7 step guide for blind removal success!

Step 1: Before you do anything, we encourage you to raise your blinds all the way up to the top. This will help make them easier for you to control during the removal process.

Step 2: Often times, some blinds treatments will use a cornice or a valance to cover the top rails and brackets. You want to remove the valance, it’s important that you are gentle when completing this. Take the bottom of the valance and push it towards the window to create a gap between the top of the valance and the top of the clips. Carefully push the valance upwards and outwards until it’s not touching the clips. If you don’t remove the valance gently, the clips may fall off.

Step 3: If you have a door-mounted blind, you need to hold down the brackets that are to be removed. These brackets are typically attached to the bottom part of the blind against the wall. The end cap of the bottom rail can have hold-down pins. If this is so, remove the hold down pins prior to removing the hold down brackets.

From here you want use your screwdriver to remove the hold down bracket screws. If the screws are too tight to remove with a screwdriver, this is where pliers comes in handy.

Step 4: If you are removing faux wood, wood or another horizontal blind, you need to unlatch the mounting brackets from both the front and side head rail out. If the blinds are bulky or heavy, you might need another person to help you during this step. If you have Roman shades, they can be spring loaded or require a tab to loosen the shade. You might need to check back to the product’s original installation guide to figure out what bracket your blind uses.

Step 5: Remove the side and center brackets that are used for mounting with a screwdriver. If the blinds have wall anchors, you may have to remove them with needle nosed pliers.

Step 6: The screws on the blinds may have left some small holes in your wall. Now it’s time to get the joint compound out and patch the holes up with a putty knife. When the compound is still wet you want smooth it out with a sponge then let it dry. After it has dried you want to apply some paint just to touch up the area.

Step 7: Now it’s time to celebrate. Congratulations on removing you old, tacky, and dirty blinds!

If you haven’t purchased replacement shades yet, check out CellularWindowShade.com’s window treatment options.
