Granted, it was mixed with rain and didn’t last all that long, but it was a reminder that the cold months are just a few short weeks ahead. It also leaves some of us scratching our heads and wondering how another year snuck by before we had a chance to escape to Florida…

Just kidding! Winter is beautiful and special just like all the other seasons! Just colder and darker, that’s all!

If this is your first winter season with cellular shades, you’ll get to experience the thrill of feeling the cold air disappear from the inside of your window the moment you close your shade. Woohoo! But even if this is your second, third, or even 15th year with honeycomb shades, you might benefit from this little cheat sheet we’ve prepared so you can use your insulating shades to their full potential.

Solar Gain By Day

If you’ve got south-facing windows, you should leave your shades raised when the sun is out to let in solar rays. This will help you save even more energy! If you work from home or are home during the day, you could even go ahead and raise your east-facing shades in the morning and west-facing shades in the afternoon, as long as they get strong sunlight. Just be sure to close these shades once the sun has passed them and the windows aren’t getting direct sunlight anymore.

Use cat(s) to help determine your household’s most bountiful solar zones!

Motorized shades are really nifty for solar gain because you can program them to lower back down on their own if you usually get home after the sun sets.

Heat Retention By Night

The second phase of this energy-saving process is to close your shades up again when the sun isn’t shining into your windows anymore. The shades, which naturally lower nightly heat loss, will work as a strong barrier that keeps the sun’s heat inside for the evening.

A Few Other Notes

It’s not a bad idea to open up your shades for a little while every day anyway to allow for a bit of air circulation to prevent ice buildup. Use the top down feature if you have a top down/bottom up shade. Our shades work so well at minimizing energy flow and drafts that the space between your shade and the window can get awfully cold in the winter!

To learn more about the winter-specific benefits of cellular window shades, check out these other resources below or call a member of our team today!

Icy Window Cure

Block Out Even More Cold!

We had our first bought of snowfall this past weekend!
